The early bird…

30 Mar

…gets up really early!!

I spent this morning (from 5.30am..) helping ring some birds in Somerford Common near Brinkworth.

At the invite of Simon Tucker (who a licence to catch and ring birds) I spent a few hours helping him set up mist nets, check the nets for birds and drink coffee – it was very early.

This was a new site for Simon and he was very pleased with the results. Overall some 30 birds were caught with c.5 already having rings. The new birds were all typical woodlands birds such as Blue, Great and Coal Tits, Robins, Lesser Redpolls and Marsh Tits – the latter two, which are a bit more unusual are shown below:Marsh Tit Somerford Common March 2013 Lesser Redpoll Somerford Common March 2013

What a wonderful way of spending a Saturday morning (or indeed any morning).
